You’ll notice that the title of this Blog: “WHAT HAPPENS ON KATAHDIN STAYS ON KATAHDIN?” is a question rather than a statement, right?
As we climb our way up toward the summit of this incredible finish (or is it just the beginning?) to our 2016 NOBO thru-hike (sometimes on all fours…) and fighting back the thought: “Will we make it?,” another gentleman is on his knee at the summit proposing to this girlfriend (and perhaps even fighting back the same thought for a different reason).
Making a commitment to share your life with someone (be it through marriage or a six month commitment to thru-hike the trail) will naturally cause the thought of “successfully making it” pass through one’s mind at some point in time.
During our descent down from the summit of Mount Katahdin, we meet up with this amazing young couple (Matt & Sarah) who were just engaged atop the very mountain that completes our journey.

Not on your life! We are blessed to have met Matt and Sarah on the trail to share our finish of a journey and their beginning of one!
Talk about a mountaintop experience? We both have such an experience to share with the world!
Matt and Sarah were kind to shuttle us back to Millinocket (after finally descending back down to the base of the mountain) and to allow us to share in the excitement of their new beginning as one another’s fiancé.
