What do you think about when you think of the State of Georgia?

The sunny South?

A Confederate State?

Hot Temperatures?

Rednecks?

The Georgia Bulldogs?

The Georgia Tech Yellowjackets?

The State above Florida?

The last thing most people think of (when they think of the State of Georgia) is snow, ice and single digit temperatures!

For those of you who are attempting to thru-hike The Appalachian Trail (North Bound) this year, think it!

It only takes a few inches of snow and ice to shut down the City of Atlanta, and this week was proof! You probably saw the news media showing abandoned vehicles on the highways and in the ditches! Some have described the visual experience as being like the apocolypse! Slipper and I have friends who spent the night in a neighboring Grocery Store and/or Department Store that was closest to where they had to abandon their vehicle. Others spent from 12-to-16-to-22 hours inside their vehicle, as they attempted to travel their daily traffic pattern home from work.

The timing of snow fall was perfect for us! We were close to home and stayed home sipping wine, watching the beauty of the snow and eating homemade soups, stews and chili. We looked at one another and said, “This is why we moved to the mountains!”

If this is your year to “move to the mountains” and thru-hike the AT, please come to Georgia prepared to experience the snow! If you will come prepared, and should you experience the beauty of snow fall on top of Springer Mountain, Hawk’s Mountain or Blood Mountain, you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful view of it while eating your homemade Ramen Noodles, Instant Potates and Macaroni.

Slipper and I are excited for all of you preparing to thru-hike The Appalachian Trail this year and we look forward to hearing your stories, seeing your photos and learning about your journey. Hike your own hike and enjoy the trail… whatever she brings to you!
