Slipper and I have “finally” been able to match our work schedules by taking off on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Yay us!

Now having off the same days, our intention is to backpack and overnight tent camp each week (getting back home in time to get a good night’s sleep in the Airstream and be ready for work the following morning).

This first week off together, we decide to hike up to Siler Bald (just outside of Franklin, NC).

Putting on the knee braces… putting our packs in the back of the Jeep… and putting on a smile… we begin our hike up toward Siler Bald. Did I say, “up?” LOL! We begin the afternoon at Winding Stair Gap and just the name “Winding Stair” should give any Hiker the idea that the hike is about to go up.

The Hike is amazing and the afternoon seems to fly by as we ascend up toward Siler Bald.

Should a Hiker become a little winded… tired… thirsty… or just desire to sit-a-spell, there are several rocks, tree trunks and stumps that one can take advantage of along the way.

In just a few short hours we arrive at Siler Bald and are able to capture a few photos before setting up camp.

*Hiker Tip: You will want to get water close to the Siler Bald Shelter before making the final climb up. The water source is about 1/2 mile down the Siler Bald Shelter Trail, but is well worth filling up before climbing up to the Bald (if your intention is to claim an overnight tent spot at Siler Bald).

Slipper and I claim a tent spot about halfway up the Bald (deciding to leave the top spots available for someone who has yet to visit Siler Bald).

We set up camp (assuming the personal tasks that we are all too familiar doing) and Slipper begins filtering water as I scope out the best place to hang our Bear Bag.

Watching clouds begin to build, we hop in the tent (a Copperspur UL3)… Start the Pocket Rocket Stove for dinner… and effectively hang the Bear Bag (Food) far enough away from camp.

As night falls, so does the rain. BAM! Lights are out (literally) for Slipper and I, and we are able to capture a good night’s sleep.

Waking up to a cup of Starbucks Coffee and knowing that today’s hike is all downhill… we take our time hiking back… stop at Panther Gap for a quick pick… and make it back home in time for an incredible sunset.

Looking for an enjoyable day hike or getting started a bit later and want to turn a day hike into an overnighter? Visit Siler Bald and enjoy the views!
